A lot of homeowners want backup power but don't want to drop thousands on a standby generator. That's where this type of setup really shines. We put together a complete portable generator solution - interlock kit, outdoor power inlet, and a full panel surge protector - and it covers all the bases without breaking the bank.

Here's how it works. The generator interlock kit gets mounted directly to the electrical panel. It's a mechanical device that physically prevents the main breaker and the generator breaker from being on at the same time. That's not just a convenience feature - it's a critical safety measure. Without it, your generator could back-feed power into the utility lines, which is extremely dangerous for utility workers and your own equipment.

The outdoor power inlet box - you can see the Generac unit mounted flush to the exterior brick wall - is where you plug your portable generator in. No extension cords running under doors or through windows. Just a clean, weatherproof connection point right on the outside of the house. It keeps things safe and makes the whole process a lot faster when the power goes out and you need to get up and running quickly.

We also installed a whole-panel surge protection device. Power outages and generator startups can cause voltage spikes that quietly damage electronics, appliances, and HVAC equipment over time. The surge protector sits right at the panel level and catches those spikes before they reach anything in the house. It's one of those things that's easy to overlook but really worth having.

Put it all together and this homeowner now has a reliable, code-compliant backup power system that they can actually use with confidence. No jury-rigged extension cords, no safety shortcuts. Just a solid setup done the right way.
