Sometimes the straightforward fix isn't actually the best fix. This homeowner needed a meter base replacement, and the easy answer would have been to just swap it out and tack on a standalone outdoor disconnect. We went a different direction.

We installed a meter/panel combo unit instead. One integrated Eaton enclosure that houses both the meter and the panel in a single, clean setup. That means a proper emergency disconnect is built right in - no separate box, no extra hardware hanging off the side of the house. It's cleaner, it's code-compliant, and it's a better long-term solution.

Here's the part that really matters for the homeowner down the road - the combo unit comes with open breaker slots. That's room to grow. Whether they want to add a circuit for an EV charger, a hot tub, a workshop, or anything else, the capacity is already there. No need to call us back for another service upgrade just because they decided to add something to the house later.

That's really the whole idea behind this approach. A straight meter base swap solves today's problem. A meter/panel combo solves today's problem and sets the homeowner up for whatever comes next. It's not a harder job - it's just a smarter one. And that's the kind of thinking we bring to every service call.

When you're already opening up the service entrance and coordinating with the utility, it's the perfect time to make sure the install actually works for the long haul. We're not here to do the minimum. We're here to do it right.
