



Lightning doesn't give you a warning. One strike and a home's electrical system can take serious damage - some of it obvious, some of it hidden. We got the call from a homeowner in Southport, NC after a storm hit their property, and we got to work figuring out exactly what the strike had affected.
The damage came down to 5 arc fault breakers in the panel and a GFCI receptacle in the kitchen. Arc fault breakers are specifically designed to detect dangerous electrical arcing that regular breakers won't catch - the kind that starts house fires inside walls. When a lightning surge hits, these are often the first components to take the hit. That's actually them doing their job. But once they're compromised, they need to come out.
We replaced all 5 arc fault breakers and swapped out the kitchen GFCI receptacle. After the work was done, we didn't just flip the breakers back on and call it good. We ran everything through our Klein Tools RT390 circuit analyzer - testing for correct wiring, checking voltage, and running a full load test on the outlet. Clean readings across the board. That's the only way we leave a job like this.
Here's the thing about lightning damage - it's not always dramatic. Sometimes a breaker looks fine but is internally compromised. Sometimes a GFCI outlet passes a basic test but fails under load. That's why we verify with actual numbers, not assumptions. This homeowner now has a panel and outlet that have been tested and confirmed safe - not just replaced and hoped for the best.
